Each Package offers links to sheet music with bowing suggestions, audio recordings at a variety of speeds and tuition videos of previous classes together with background information and suggestions for further listening and reading.

An Exploration of tunes from the manuscripts English Romantic poet from Helpston, Northamptonshire, John Clare (1793-1864).
Alongside his famous poetry about the natural world and rural peasantry, Clare was also a passionate folk musician, an enthusiastic "decent scraper" of the fiddle, and a notable collector of traditional English ballads and dance tunes.
“John Clare left behind him a fascinating insight into what it was like to be a village fiddler, in his poems, his writings and his tune collections which represent a remarkable is the range of music: songs his parents sang, popular songs from operas, tunes he learnt from the various Gypsy families that camped near Helpstone, as well as country dances, jigs, reels, folk songs of the time as well as Scottish and Irish tunes.”

Gently Paced (3) Mixed Tradition Class

This relaxed friendly class is not for complete beginners but it is for those who prefer to learn and play at a relatively gentle pace. The tunes will be chosen for their suitability to sound satisfying at any speed and to nurture the abilities of participants. Tunes will be drawn mainly from English, Irish and Scottish and European traditions. The class allows time for participants to work on technical issues such as violin and bow hold, release of tension whilst playing and leaning to increase confidence.

An opportunity to explore tunes from a wide variety of traditions.
We look at tunes in detail, working on accompaniments, harmony parts and detailed arrangements.
If you are looking for an occasional or monthly drop in via zoom (or face to face in Towcester) this could be ideal opportunity.
The tunes are not taught in detail by ear but recordings and sheet music are provided in advance, so a certain amount of preparation can really help. Many tunes overlap with other London Fiddle School Classes.
Sheet Music and recordings will be sent in advance.
